It all started with the first black film producer, director and writer Oscar Micheaux who produced race films both in silent and sound. He was able to offer black actors leading dignified roles. His first film was the Homesteader in 1919 which grossed over $5000. He opened doors for black actors to showcase their talent in acting such as Paul Robeson, Fredi Washington, Evelyn Preer, William Smith and many more. In 1939 Hattie McDaniel became the first African American to win an Academy Award for her performance in Gone with the Wind. It was a challenge for black actresses who were only offered parts as a maid. But they were some actresses that refused to be typecast such as Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, Fredi Washington, and Hazel Scott . There are so many to uncover in the 1900s of Black Hollywood.
